The ping sends a signal (XML-RPC) to notify blog search engines "ping servers", that a Blogger has made a new post. Blog search engines provide fresh results very quickly by checking only recently published blogs. Then they add them to a list of blogs having new content.

There are many pinging services which ping multiple ping servers. One of the popular services is WeBlogs and it's absolutely free. Other popular ping services like BlogFlux and technorati also work great.
